Late August - One Homegrown Ear of Corn

I don't exactly know why, but I've always loved cornfields. And I've always wanted to grow my own corn, transfer it directly from plant to boiling water, and taste that fresh-as-can-be homegrown sweetness.

This year, I planted 10 corn kernels. Several germinated and then died. Just one made it to maturity. When it first poked through the soil, it looked, logically, much like the blades of grass that like to pop up in our raised beds. But this one was a little thicker, the leaves started a little higher, and well, it just looked like something. So we left it there, and it grew into the beautiful tall green plant you see next to Jonah and me in these pictures. I was so proud.

Our beautiful corn plant produced a single ear of corn. That was it. So Isaac, Adam and I shared it at dinner. It was incredibly good, every bit as good as I'd hoped. And we each got exactly one third of an ear.

Below, a few extras of Jonah from the same week. A baby and a pot of water on a hot day - can't beat that.

Mmmm...dirt.

By this point, Jonah was getting really good at rolling the ball to us. His aim is pretty impressive and quite consistent.

Sept 4 - First Family Hike!

Adam and I used to live in Boulder, and we love to go back there for daytrips. I'll never forget when we first passed through this beautiful place, on a cross-country road trip, and saw Chatauqua for the first time. I think Adam fell in love with Colorado for its space, its feeling of freedom, the huge skies, but for me, I think it was this mountain park. I just couldn't believe that a small, accessible city could have mountains and meadows within its limits.

Every time I approach Chatauqua, I still feel the same awe. Though we have so many options in the Front Range, this is still my favorite place to hike. And it warms my heart to hear Isaac call it by name and beg to go there when we are in Boulder.

This day was the first time we tried a real hike with the boys. Isaac never liked the carrier much, but Jonah was grinning and excited from the beginning. What a relief - that means we can do more of this! We were counting on Isaac to walk, and though he complained a lot before lunch, he was an amazing hiker once he had some food in his belly.

Below, the approach to the park and the Flatirons - breathtaking.

This hill is actually pretty steep. I'm so proud of Isaac for walking it.

We wanted to eat in the shade, so we headed for the woods. There was a perfect spot tucked into the ridge, with big rocks and a great view to the north.

Jonah was having a great time.

There's our view and a happy Dada, eating the sandwiches I'd made us - summer veggies and herbs and chiles with fresh mozzarella on whole wheat sourdough. Yummy.

It was a warm day, but the wind whipped up as we sat there. We were okay in between gusts, but it was really blowing.

Jonah got happier when I gave him his cheese.

Lots and lots of cheese.

I love the prairie grasses in late summer and fall. So much texture.

We hiked into the adjacent meadow after lunch to see the view of the plains and Boulder, and to show Isaac how far he'd walked. We'd come from the edge of those trees, plus we'd walked a few blocks from our car.

Love this shot of my boys.

I thought Isaac had hiked enough for one day and we'd just go back the same way, but then Adam showed him a "secret trail." It was a much smaller path that connected to the canyon trail down in the meadow below and eventually led back to the parking lot. The route was a little longer that way, but Isaac was so excited about the secret trail, and we set off.

The scenery was gorgeous, and on a crowded day, we were the only people in sight. I think it really was a secret trail.

The trail wound around the mountain and then came out into the meadow. The terrain was a little bumpy, but Isaac was doing great.

Since we'd parked about 4 blocks away, Adam and sleeping Jonah hiked back to get the car and pick us up in the parking lot. And Isaac and I got a special hike together. We watched the hordes of grasshoppers and talked about all kinds of things. He even let me take his picture.

Twice.

I wish I knew how far Isaac hiked that day, but it was certainly a couple of miles, with enough elevation gain to get us all winded. Good job little hiker!

To make the day perfect, we stopped at Bova's on the way home for our favorite frozen custard. Yummy.

Aug 28 - Anniversary Weekend

This blog is supposed to be about the kids, but I'm going to make a brief post about us, the parents, to remember a wonderful weekend of surprises Adam planned for us to celebrate 8 years of marriage.

We still can't easily leave the boys, so instead he had the clever idea of creating a weekend away at home. We got babysitters for much of the weekend, including the mornings, so we could stay out later without the usual worries of sleep loss.

The first night was a surprise picnic at a beautiful mountaintop park in Jefferson County. Adam grilled fish and zucchini and brought a bubbly drink to share - natural soda since I couldn't drink at the time.

We don't take much time to ourselves these days, but this was a wonderful mini-vacation.

Aug 27 - Picnic in Boulder

When I have an appointment in Boulder, which happens about once a month, the boys and I always make a morning of it and make sure to see the mountains up close. This time though, Isaac hadn't seemed that excited about a picnic, so I didn't make any lunch. But on the way to my appointment, he asked if we were going to have a picnic.
Now you want a picnic?
He then said he wanted to go to Chatauqua (my favorite spot in Boulder, pictured above), calling it by name.
Okay.
So we picked up sandwiches at Snarf's, and I carried Jonah and lunch up the trail while Isaac did a great job walking.
This is the only picture I got, but the boys LOVED being in this beautiful place and eating our sandwiches outside together. Isaac told me, when he saw the open meadows at the base of the Flatirons, "Mama I'm going to go in there and run aROUND a lot!"
And once he finished lunch, he ran up and down the trail. Effortless energy.
Last time it was pizza on Pearl Street Mall; this time sandwiches at Chatauqua - what fun days with my little guys.

Aug 22 - Post-wedding brunch and last day in Maine

Above, the house we love so much. How fun to have so many friends and family from all over to share it with. Brunch was catered, with all kinds of great food in the dining room and an omelet bar on the sun porch (Jonah's personal favorite - he ate about 1.5 large omelets!). People hung out on the front porch, downstairs, in the grass, and toured the house too.

Below, Jane's room again. You can see Walker's Point, home of the Bush clan, jutting out into the water.

Omelet bar below. You put all the different toppings you want in a bowl, hand it to one of the guys, and they give you a beautiful omelet in about 3 minutes.

My mom and a good friend put together a CD of 50 years of family photos from this house. It streamed on the computer during the brunch.

Jonah was up early

and then crashed for a little while.

After the brunch, there was nothing left to do but relax...

and eat leftover cupcakes, beef tenderloin with horseradish sauce, ham biscuits, roasted root veggies...

and just take in the view.
