A Four-Year-Old's Thoughts on Death

I was excited because Isaac made a dinosaur out of play-doh that actually looked like a dinosaur! He's finally starting to include recognizable details in his art, like legs.

Isaac, in conversation with the dinosaur he had just made: "It's your birthday! Now you're five. And after you're five, you're going to be SIX. And then you might die."

Dinosaur (who maybe shouldn't go here but was feeling curious): "What happens after that?"

Isaac: "You might come back to alive again. Jesus died, and then he came alive again."

Dinosaur: "Then maybe I will too."

Isaac: "But not your body. Your body doesn't come alive again."

Later that afternoon...

Isaac: "I don't know why we die."
Me: "I think our bodies just get used up..."
Isaac: "And our card is full?" (little engineer talking!)
Me: "Well, our cards don't get full."
Isaac: "Our cards?"
Me: "You mean like a computer, right?"
Isaac: "Yeah."
Me: "For us, we call it our brain, and the more you use it, the more space it makes!"
Isaac: Big smile and hug. "I love you
