Isaac turned 3!

Here is our big boy on his 3rd birthday. Sometimes it's hard to believe that the tiny baby who snuggled in my arms is now a long-legged, agile preschooler with boundless energy.

I'd expected to give him a party, but when I asked him who to invite, he said: "Just Mama, Dada and Jonah."

We let him pick what he wanted to do and where to eat. Of course he wanted to spend the morning at the Children's Museum, and for his birthday meal - anything he wanted made from scratch - pancakes at Mona's. I let him choose the cake too - same deal, anything made from scratch - and he wanted cupcakes from Happy Cakes. We let him pick 4 to bring home, and we ate one on the front porch after our pancake lunch.

So I was off the hook this time...

Like last year, we made him go through his pile of presents slowly, one at a time, over a few days. But in spite of our efforts, and even without a party, the day was too much for him. The morning was fun, lunch was fun - we tried to give him a special day - but he became crankier and more demanding as the day wore on. By the end, I think Adam and I were just ready to get back to normal. Time for the long-anticipated July 28 to be over. I'd started out the day dreaming of snuggling my beautiful, cone-headed, bright-eyed, perfect little newborn in the hospital room...and finished it with my ears ringing from tantrums and wondering what happened to the boy who used to appreciate each gift, even down to the wrapping paper. But for every fit thrown over a seemingly tiny issue, there are a hundred hugs and kisses, I love you Mamas, and joyful grins. Happy birthday to our goofy, deeply emotional, gleeful, independent, sweet-voiced, focused, intelligent, crazy, energetic, fiercely-loving Isaac. We adore you.
